Step into the world of handmade printmaking with this welcoming, hands-on introduction to block printing. Designed for all skill levels—from absolute beginners to seasoned creatives looking to expand their toolkit—this workshop guides participants through the full process of carving, inking, and printing using relief printing techniques.

To keep the focus on learning technique rather than drawing from scratch, participants will choose from one of two provided designs to carve—a robot or a floral motif. This approach allows time to concentrate on safe carving, tool control, and understanding how designs translate from block to paper.

Participants will explore essential techniques such as selecting and using carving tools, choosing inks and papers, and pulling clean, consistent prints. Along the way, the instructor will introduce concepts of composition, texture, and the expressive possibilities unique to block printing.

All tools and materials are provided, including carving tools, blocks, inks, brayers, and paper. Just bring your curiosity and a willingness to experiment. By the end of the session, participants will leave with finished prints, a carved block they can reuse at home, and the confidence to continue exploring this timeless craft.

No prior experience required.

About the Instructor: Michael Kaizar

Michael Kaizar discovered block printing during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Long drawn to the bold, graphic look of traditional prints, he hadn’t initially considered that he could create them himself. Like many people seeking creative outlets during that time, he turned to tutorials and local classes, gradually building the skills, tools, and confidence to carve his own designs.

Based in Columbus, Ohio, Michael now runs a small, part-time printmaking business with the help of his wife. His first sales took place at a simple fold-up table in his neighborhood. By the summer of 2025, he was exhibiting at local markets and fairs, culminating in his acceptance into the Emerging Artists Program at the 2025 Columbus Winterfair—his first major step into the world of professional art shows.
