Step back into the world of handwritten correspondence and try your hand at writing with ink in this relaxed, hands-on workshop. This is not a calligraphy class—no prior experience or special skill required. Instead, participants are invited to explore historic writing tools and discover what writing felt like before ballpoint pens and keyboards.
Participants will have the chance to write using steel nib dip pens, experiment with quill pens fitted with nibs, and try writing with a traditional feather quill on its own. We’ll talk briefly about how these tools were used historically, then give plenty of time to experiment, write, and find what feels comfortable.
The workshop will also cover how letters were traditionally folded into their own envelopes and sealed with wax, and participants will create and seal their own letters during the program.
Each participant will:
Experiment with multiple historic writing tools
Learn traditional letter folding and wax sealing
Create one or more handwritten letters
Take home a dip pen and steel nib, along with their completed letters
This workshop is perfect for anyone curious about historic daily life, hands-on history, or simply slowing down and enjoying the art of writing.
No experience required. All materials provided.
