Tuscany: Where History, Flavor, and Beauty Meet

Step into the heart of Tuscany, a region where Renaissance art, medieval towns, and rolling vineyards create an unforgettable tapestry of culture and beauty. Our journey begins in Florence, home to the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria, and Michelangelo’s David, before continuing to Pisa to marvel at the Leaning Tower and the wonders of the Piazza dei Miracoli.

From the Renaissance walls of Lucca to the medieval streets of Arezzo and Cortona, each town reveals a new chapter of Tuscany’s story. We’ll explore the soaring towers of San Gimignano, sip wines in the hills of Chianti, and wander Siena’s UNESCO-listed old town before pausing in the fortified village of Monteriggioni.

The adventure continues in Volterra, steeped in Etruscan and medieval history, with a farmhouse lunch and Pecorino tasting. We’ll conclude in the Val d’Orcia, discovering Pienza, Montepulciano, and Montalcino—towns that embody the best of Tuscany’s heritage, vistas, and world-class wines. Along the way, expert guides and local flavors ensure this isn’t just a trip, but a true taste of Tuscany’s soul.

Itinerary

March 30 – Florence Arrive in Florence and enjoy a scenic drive along the Viale dei Colli to Piazzale Michelangelo for a sweeping view of the city, followed by visits to S. Miniato al Monte and Forte Belvedere. Continue past the Porta Romana and Pitti Palace before beginning a guided walking tour through the historic center, including Piazza della Repubblica, Piazza del Duomo, and Piazza della Signoria. The day concludes with a visit to the Accademia Museum to admire Michelangelo’s David.

March 31 – Pisa Travel with your driver to Pisa and join a guided walking tour of the Piazza dei Miracoli, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the impressive Duomo, the round Baptistery, and the world-famous Leaning Tower before enjoying free time for lunch or independent exploration. Return to Florence in the afternoon.

April 1 – Lucca Spend the morning in Lucca on a guided walking tour of the city’s Renaissance walls, Romanesque churches, and picturesque piazzas. After some free time, continue into the countryside for a visit to a family-owned winery, where you’ll enjoy a light Tuscan lunch paired with wine and olive oil tastings. Return to Florence in the early afternoon with the remainder of the day at leisure.

April 2 – Arezzo & Cortona Begin the day with a guided walking tour of Arezzo, one of Tuscany’s oldest cities, featuring Renaissance frescoes by Piero della Francesca, the Duomo, and its lively medieval streets. Continue to Cortona, a hilltop town known for its Etruscan heritage and charming atmosphere, made famous by Under the Tuscan Sun. Stroll the cobbled lanes, browse artisan shops, and take in sweeping countryside views before returning to Florence.

April 3 – San Gimignano & Chianti Travel to the medieval hill town of San Gimignano, known for its striking skyline of towers and history along the Via Francigena. Wander its atmospheric streets before continuing through the Chianti wine region, with its rolling hills and vineyards. Stop at a winery for a guided cellar tour and enjoy a full Tuscan lunch paired with their celebrated wines.

April 4 – Siena & Monteriggioni En route to Siena, visit Monteriggioni, a perfectly preserved medieval walled village. Upon arrival in Siena, take a guided walking tour through its UNESCO-listed old town, with highlights including the Gothic cathedral, Torre del Mangia, and the famous shell-shaped Piazza del Campo. Enjoy free time before settling in for your overnight stay in Siena.

April 5 – Volterra & Pecorino Farm Discover Volterra on a guided walking tour of this ancient hilltop town, exploring landmarks such as Piazza dei Priori and its medieval palazzo. Afterwards, continue to a local Pecorino cheese producer for a farmhouse lunch, where you’ll taste a variety of sheep’s milk cheeses paired with regional wines and fresh local products.

April 6 – Pienza, Montepulciano & Montalcino. Begin the day in Pienza, a Renaissance town redesigned by Pope Pius II, where you’ll visit its cathedral and palazzi. Continue to Montepulciano to explore its Renaissance architecture and sample its renowned Vino Nobile wines. End in Montalcino, home of Brunello, with a visit to a winery for a cellar tour and tasting of this world-class wine before returning to Siena.

April 7 – Departure Private transfer from Siena to Florence Airport for your departing flight. Your drivers will ensure a comfortable and timely journey to begin your trip home.

This tour involves significant walking and physical activity, with daily guided walking tours through Tuscany’s towns and cities—often lasting three hours or more. Travelers will navigate cobblestone streets, narrow alleys, and historic staircases, as well as hills and sloped terrain common in medieval hilltop villages. While the pace is steady and breaks are included, participants should expect long days on foot, sometimes without easy opportunities to sit or rest. Comfortable, supportive footwear is essential, and a moderate to good level of fitness and mobility is recommended to fully enjoy the experience.

2. A non-refundable reservation fee is required at time of registration. Reservation fees can be paid by credit card with no additional fee, however all remaining payments should be made by check, payable to CRF Museum, or be charged an additional 3% credit card processing fee.

5. Cancellation, minus reservation fee, is only refundable up to the advertised deposit deadline. After the deadline all payments are non-refundable. In the event of nationwide covid-19 lockdowns, natural disasters, war, etc. the CRF Museum reserves the right to cancel the entirety of the trip after this deadline. In the unlikely event of an emergency cancelation, the museum will refund the full amount possible according to agreements with our travel partners.

6. We encourage guests to purchase travel insurance or use a credit card with automatic coverage when purchasing airfare. CRF Museum and travel partners cannot be held liable for any loss of funds due to termination or changes to your trip.

Journey into the Land of the Rising Sun

Discover a country where ancient traditions and cutting-edge modernity exist side by side. Our journey begins in the lively neighborhoods of Osaka and winds through Kyoto’s timeless temples, the poignant memorials of Hiroshima, the storybook charm of Miyajima, and the buzzing energy of Tokyo. Along the way, we’ll stroll through historic districts and bamboo forests, marvel at castles and shrines, ride the sleek Shinkansen, and taste everything from elegant kaiseki dinners to sizzling street food. This is more than a tour—it’s a chance to experience the spirit of Japan through its culture, history, cuisine, and people.

Itinerary

June 3 – Osaka Arrive in Osaka and transfer to the Dotonbori district, known for its bright neon lights, bustling canals, and endless food stalls that have earned the city its reputation as Japan’s “kitchen.”

June 4 – Kyoto Travel to Kyoto, the former imperial capital and heart of Japan’s traditional culture. Walk beneath the thousands of vermilion gates at Fushimi Inari Shrine, admire the Zen gardens of Tenryuji and the towering bamboo of Arashiyama, ride the nostalgic Sagano Scenic Railway, and marvel at the golden splendor of Kinkakuji Temple. Cap the day with a welcome dinner.

June 5 – Kyoto & Nara Take a day trip to Nara, Japan’s first permanent capital, where you’ll see the monumental Great Buddha inside Todaiji Temple. Try your hand at a dango cooking class before returning to Kyoto to visit Sanjusangendo, a hall lined with 1,001 statues of Kannon. End the day with a tea ceremony.

June 6 – Kurashiki & Hiroshima Board the train for Hiroshima, stopping en route at Kurashiki, famous for its preserved Bikan Old Town with Edo-period warehouses and canals. In Hiroshima, we recommend the city’s signature dish, okonomiyaki, for dinner.

June 7 – Miyajima Island Reflect at Hiroshima’s Peace Museum and Park, then ferry to nearby Miyajima, long revered as a sacred island. Visit Itsukushima Shrine, with its torii gate appearing to float on the water, and explore the quiet temples of the forested slopes, including Daisho-in.

June 8 – Himeji & Nagoya Ride the Shinkansen to Himeji to visit Japan’s most spectacular feudal fortress, Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continue to Nagoya, where an evening street food tour introduces you to the city’s lively culinary scene.

June 9 – Nagoya & Tokyo Spend the morning at the Toyota Commemorative Museum (subject to change), which traces the company’s roots from weaving looms to global auto making. Travel onward to Tokyo, Japan’s bustling capital, and experience the energy of Shibuya in the evening.

June 10 – Tokyo Explore Tokyo’s contrasts: the forested Meiji Shrine, colorful Takeshita Dori youth fashion street, luxury boutiques of Ginza, and the lively temple district of Asakusa with Sensoji, Tokyo’s oldest Buddhist temple. Afterward, take in the nightlife on a guided tour of Shinjuku.

June 11 – Kamakura Choose an optional excursion to Kamakura, a former shogunal capital filled with temples and history, or spend the day exploring Tokyo at your own pace before gathering together for a farewell dinner.

June 12 – Departure Enjoy a free morning before transferring to the airport for your return flight to the United States.

This tour involves full days of sightseeing on foot, often over uneven surfaces, steps, and sloped paths at temples, shrines, and historic districts. Travelers will also navigate busy train stations and public transport. A moderate level of fitness and comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

Itinerary

June 19 Arrive in Dublin and meet your driver-guide before traveling west across Ireland, passing through scenic countryside en route to Clonmacnoise, a 6th-century monastic site on the River Shannon. Continue to Galway City, known for its medieval roots and lively cultural scene, where you’ll spend the night in the heart of town.

June 20 Explore the wild beauty of Connemara, a region of rugged mountains, lakes, and remote villages. Visit Glengowla Mines and enjoy a sheepdog demonstration before touring Kylemore Abbey and taking in stunning views throughout Connemara National Park, returning to Galway for the evening.

June 21 Travel south along Ireland’s dramatic Atlantic coast, taking in the unique landscape of The Burren and the breathtaking Cliffs of Moher. Continue through charming villages and the picturesque town of Adare before arriving in Killarney for an overnight stay.

June 22 Journey along the scenic Ring of Kerry, passing through charming villages and coastal landscapes. Enjoy a traditional pub lunch and a guided walk in Derrynane National Park, before returning to Killarney via mountain passes and lakeside views.

June 23 Depart Killarney and travel east toward Dublin, stopping for a guided tour and tasting at the Jameson Distillery in Midleton and a visit to the historic Rock of Cashel. Arrive in Dublin for an overnight stay in the heart of the city.

June 24 Explore Ireland’s capital city with visits to Trinity College to see the famed Book of Kells, EPIC: The Irish Emigration Museum, and the iconic Guinness Storehouse—where your tour ends with a pint and panoramic views of Dublin from the Gravity Bar.

June 25 Transfer to the airport for your return flight. Depending on your departure time, use the morning to explore the city on your own.

Ashley is an educator from Indiana. She’s passionate about connecting with locals and is continually humbled by the opportunities travel brings. Her favorite moments are often the unexpected—watching the sunrise over the Nile, running along Havana’s Malecón, or stepping into King Tut’s tomb. Traveling with the museum has made experiences like these not only possible, but unforgettable.
