The Western Front: Battlefield Tour


In honor of the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War, the CRF Museum is proud to offer this opportunity to visit some of the most famous and pivotal battlefields in Europe including the Somme, Flanders, and Verdun. Travelers will also be able to explore the history and culture of France and Belgium, including cities such as Paris and Brussels. Participants will gain access to museums, cemeteries, trenches, bunkers and some of the most inspiring memorials in the world, such as the Douaumont Ossuary.

Thanks to a partnership with Central European Tours, this special 11 day group tour is available for June 2018.
Packages including round trip airfare, lodging, and transportation start at only $5,490.



Proposed Itinerary

The CRF Museum and Central Euro Tours have hand-picked some of the most decisive battles and remarkable sites to visit along the Western Front, however hundreds more lay in the surrounding countryside along with scores of other important historical and cultural places.  The itinerary below was designed to best tell the story of the First World War while also providing ample time for visitors to explore France and Belgium.  Most of the WW1 sites will be visited in the mornings while late afternoons and evenings will be free for travelers to explore on their own.  In addition, Central European Tours is known for their flexible travel plans and if the group as a whole desires, the itinerary below can be altered on a day-to-day basis to include new locations or reduce listed locations.

Day 1 – Depart for Europe, overnight flight.
Day 2 – Arrive in Paris, France.  Meet your European tour guide and check into hotel before exploring the city.  Overnight in Paris.
Day 3 – Continue exploring the city center and many unique historical and cultural spots.  Overnight in Paris.
Day 4 – Depart Paris for the Somme, one of the bloodiest battles in history.  Visit the Museum of the Great War and overnight in Péronne.
Day 5 – Visit the Cambrai Tank Museum in Flesquieres, before crossing into Belgium and visiting the battlefields of Fromelles and Ypres, including the Fromelles Museum, Cobbers Memorial, Tyne Cot, and the V.C. Corner Memorial before witnessing the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate. Overnight in Ypres.
Day 6 – A tour Flanders and Passchendale includes the Flanders Fields Museum, Exeter Farm and Langemark.  Overnight in Brussels.
Day 7 – Explore the city center of Brussels, Belgium.  Famous sites include Atomium and Mannekin Pis.  Overnight in Brussels.
Day 8 – Visit the Royal Museum of the Army of Belgium and the Cantillon brewery.  Overnight in the Ardennes region.
Day 9 – Explore the forts, trenches, tunnels, and bunkers of Verdun, including and the Douaumont Ossuary and Les Eparges.  Overnight in Reims.
Day 10 – Return and continue exploring Paris on our final day in Europe.  Options include a visit to the French countryside.  Overnight in Paris.
Day 11 – Return home.

Note: Travelers will be given evenings to explore the cities and culture on their own or with others.  Suggestions and help with arrangements can be made to assist with discovering important Medieval, Renaissance, and WW2 sights.

What’s Included


This tour includes round trip airfare, hotel accommodations (based on 2 people per room), mini-bus transportation in Europe, and access to all relevant or listed museums and other sights.

Note: Airfare prices based on Columbus or Cleveland, Ohio.  We can assist with arranging airfare from other locations, but pricing is subject to change.  Hotel accommodations reflect two people per room, for those interested in single rooms pricing is subject to change.



Requirements & Frequently Asked Questions


  • 50% deposit due by April 1, 2018.  Remaining funds due April 30th.
  • Travelers are responsible for obtaining their own passport and following all laws.
  • Prices reflect a set number of attendees required per trip, if minimum number of attendees not met all participants will be notified and offered revised rates or option to withdraw.
  • The CRF Museum reserves the right to cancel all trips.
  • Travelers must be 18 years of age or attended by an adult.
  • The CRF Museum and Mohican Historical Society can not be held liable for health or safety issues that may arise.
